IT and Libraries: New solution for digital libraries gets unveiled
“Xerox Russia” is bringing to the Russian market a “Full-Text Digital Library” solution, designed to deal with complex problems arising during organization of electronic repositories of library holdings and other kinds of digital collections. The solution, developed for universities and libraries, will enable to work with archives and holdings, provide safe access to the entire array of accumulated book heritage via digital library for students and faculty and also Internet users.
“Full-Text Digital Library” solution has been developed by Russian specialists and aims to facilitate the retrieval of documents, stored in e-databases, and configure distributed access to holdings featuring rare, historical, archival materials. The solution is indispensable to libraries equipped with Integrated library system (library management system) which have branches and regional affiliates. It allows integration of all the holdings into a common interregional e-repository. The software developed by Xerox ensures preservation of priceless and rare books via digitization: high-quality scanning of editions, resource building, setting of differentiated data access, and replication of documents in libraries having their own presses. The offer may be scaled according to individual wishes and needs of customers.
The solution is based on Xerox Docushare platform – content management system, which enables to publish, edit, share and manage data in a centralized repository and also provides access to common information resources to several users at the same time.
The crucial feature of the solution is the collection visualization module, which provides a number of interesting options for collection view: no risk of saving the content on a local disc; 3D page-turning effect; two-page or one-page view modes. What is more, users can enter the number of necessary page from the keyboard to jump to it and view the page.
