History of Russia: Series of expeditions follow traces of the photographer Prokudin-Gorsky

10 May 2011

Series of expeditions following the traces of the photographer Prokudin-Gorsky have been launched in the Urals, where the photographer travelled 100 years ago. The project is called “Our Urals”. In 1912 the famous Russian photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky went up the Chusovaya River from Perm to its upper reaches by Yekaterinburg. Right then he for the first time captured in color many sights of the Urals – picturesque rocks, localities, mines.

– We have decided to take the same route and take photos of the same sites and if possible from the same angle, – told the author of the project Pavel Raspopov. The first expedition kicked off in early May. Before the end of summer members of the expedition are going to follow the whole route of Prokudin-Gorsky.

The remarkable Russian photographer, Mendeleev’s pupil, inventor, member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society Sergei Prokudin-Gorski made a great contribution to the development of photography and cinematography. He became a pioneer of color photography in Russia, while his project “The Collection of Sights of the Russian Empire” represents a unique object of cultural heritage.
