5 May 2011

May 5 – August 15, 2011 the Press History Museum in St. Petersburg is running an exhibition “Three Centuries of St. Petersburg Press”.

The history of printing has been inseparably connected with the history of St. Petersburg. At all its stages books, newspapers, magazines reflected achievements of science, technology, culture and social life. On banks of the Neva River were working well-known publishers who opened many priceless masterpieces of Russian literature to the world.

Russia’s school of journalism was born in St. Petersburg. City’s printing enterprises turned from cottage industry into modern industry implementing state-of-the-art technology.

With St. Petersburg and the name of its founder – Emperor Peter the Great – is connected the creation of the Civil ABC and reforms of Russian script. First public libraries appeared here as well.

The exhibition which brought together exhibits from holdings of the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg and collections of city’s largest publishing and printing houses, will show the milestones of St. Petersburg press.
