World History: Visit of Peter the Great to Königsberg fortress immortalized in Kaliningrad

21 June 2011

On June 17, 2011 in Kaliningrad appeared a commemorative sign which immortalizes a visit of the Russian Emperor Peter I to Königsberg. The sign in the shape of a bronze medallion has been placed on Friedrichsburger Gate. It has been done by sculptures from Kaliningrad Oblast Lyudmila Bogatova and Andrei Shevtsov.

In 1697 Peter I arrived to Königsberg fortress, where Frederick III gave him a cordial welcome. The aim of the Russian monarch’s visit was to learn the ropes of artillery art. From Königsberg the Russian Tsar moved to Europe to learn shipbuilding.
