IT and Society: Tatarstan boasts a new terminal able to replace a rural library

18 June 2011

One of IT companies in Kazan has developed a system called “Azbuka” (Automated protected library universal capsule).

A unique device will enable rural people to read any book, periodical and, what is more, get distance education. It can work in the remotest areas with no Internet connection or mobile services.

The device resembles a usual payment terminal. The mere difference is that the screen shows not the emblems of mobile phone operators, but book sections. You can access classical literature, fiction, detective stories, religious and philosophical texts, textbooks, educational programs, newspapers and magazines.

The company’s director Igor Sergunin says that this device is called to eliminate digital divide between citizens of urban and rural areas. People who live in remote areas are often deprived of modern communications, and as a result they don’t know how to use them.

All the materials are found on the company’s server. They can be downloaded to laptops and other devices. However, developers have no illusions about availability of gadgets in rural areas. That’s why the terminal will go together with eBooks. Not only do they help to read books but they also give an opportunity to complete various tasks and tests. Using the terminal fulfilled works can be sent to school or university, connected to the system.

The terminal has a built-in sensor which receives and amplifies even a very weak GSM-signal, which is not received by other devices. It means that in case there are problems with mobile communication in the village, next to the terminal cell phones will work perfectly well. Developers are sure that the library capsule will help to solve the problem of low-enrollment rural schools.
