World History: Golden Horde’s coin dated from mid. 14th c. unearthed in Kulikovo Field

One of the most informative archaeological finds – a silver Golden Horde’s coin was unearthed in the Kulikovo Field, on the site of the battle in the year of 1380. This historic artifact sheds light on the specific epoch in the history of the Kulikovo Filed, while together with other finds – fragments of armament, discovered before, - on strong evidence of the Battle of Kulikovo.

In 2011 the relics of the Battle of Kulikovo are being searched, as before, by specialists of the State Museum-Reserve “Kulikovo Field” and State Historical Museum.

Arabic coin – is a historical artifact that due to the science of numismatics reveals names of khans, the chronology of their reign, sites of coining money. By analyzing the Arabic ornate lettering on the coin discovered in the Kulikovo Field, one will learn that it was coined during the reign of khan Jani Beg in the town of Gülüstan dating from 753 AH, what corresponds to the year 1353 AD.

Dirham of khan Jani Beg was widespread both in the Golden Horde, as well as in Russian Princedoms, and during the time of the Battle of Kulikovo. Dirham from the Kulikovo Field has survived in good state, the coin is whole, what means that it was lost in the early period of its circulation.

The new find from the field of the Battle of Kulikovo will soon occupy its place at the museum of Monastyrschino village among relics that were discovered by archaeologists in the battlefield before.

Relics of the Battle of Kulikovo are being searched not only in the Kulikovo Field. Study of Russian archives and museum collections provide new information on relics of the Battle of Kulikovo, unearthed in 18th c., 19th c. and early 20th c. by history buffs.
