27 July 2011

The family estate of Admiral Feodor Ushakov, located in the village of Zhedrino (Ulyanovsk Region), will be restored and turned into an ethnographic park.

The restoration will be fulfilled to the graduate thesis of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts graduate Anton Firsov “Ethnographic park in Ulyanovsk Region”, which is Repin prize winner.

Restoration of Admiral Feodor Ushakov’s family estate will be conducted on the historical site.

– The noble estate in the village of Zhedrino is supposed to be restored as an open-air museum with the church, house, park and all estate buildings, – said the architect’s scientific adviser Kirill Yakovlev.

He said that the idea of the graduate thesis was born a year before and was approved by Ulyanovsk Region Administration.

Wooden architecture and traditional culture, mainly that of peasants’, is on the verge of extinction, therefore it is highly important to preserve what has survived. The project’s author visited the destroyed estate, took measurements, and after that spent much time in the archives.

The village of Zhedrino is situated 120 km away from Ulyanovsk and almost at the same distance from Samara and Penza. About 50 people live in the village, the place with rich history is nearly uninhabited. The author however hopes that with the restoration of the church and building of the ethnographic park this wonderful site will attract many visitors.
