Exhibitions: Porkhov Local Lore Museum stages an exhibition “Old Porkhov, Pre-war Porkhov, Modern Porkhov"
Porkhov Local Lore Museum has launched an exhibition “Old Porkhov, Pre-war Porkhov, Modern Porkhov", which celebrates 665th anniversary of the first record of the town of Porkhov in a chronicle. The museum staff says that the idea of the exhibition is to show visitors the link of times.
The exhibition gives a chance to compare photos of the pre-war and modern Porkhov, and, for example, see the difference between the present-day Lenin Avenue and its predecessor - Petersburg Street. Besides, the exhibition unveils artifacts of Porkhov of different times: from spearheads found by archaeologists and church utensils to the first TV sets, which appeared in Porkhov households half a century ago. Religious books, coats of arms and flags of Porkhov, which have been prepared in different times by various cartographers and artists of Porkhov fortress, paintings of local artists and private belongings of residents of Porkhov who brought fame to the town – all this was delivered from storerooms and put on show within the exhibition.
The town of Porkhov was founded in 1239, when people of Novgorod together with Prince Alexander Yaroslavovich (Nevsky) were setting up a system of wooden towns on Shelon River. The first record of Porkhov dates back to the 1346 chronicle which refers to the Lithuanian Prince Algirdas.
