History of St. Petersburg: Series of events “Day of Dostoyevsky”

On July 2, 2011 St. Petersburg mounted a series of cultural events which brought together museums, theatres, cinemas, exhibition hall, libraries, and featured performances, movies show, exhibitions, lectures united under one theme “Life and Work of Fyodor Dostoyevsky”.

“Day of Fyodor Dostoyevsky” – is a series of events which welcome residents of St. Petersburg and its guests, a holiday which aims to preserve the memory and heritage of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, unite the name of the great writer with the main city of his life and work, which debuted in 2010.

A symbolic start to the holiday was given at the monument to Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Vladimirskaya Square. From that very moment the whole adjacent area of Kuznechny Lane and Bolshaya Morskaya Street turned into the corner of St. Petersburg of 2nd half 19th century. Theatre performances went on in the historical scenery, among characters created by the writer and recognizable personages of that epoch. Residents and guests of St. Petersburg had a chance to join fancy-dress tours, performances of open-air drama and puppet theatres, interactive programs of the “Day of Dostoyevsky”.

The holiday has been co-organized by the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg City Administration and M. Yu. Lermontov inter-district centralized library system.
