IT and Security: Mail.ru will check external links for trustworthiness

29 August 2011

Mail.ru has announced about the introduction of a new technology that is to increase the security level on its mail service. Now moving from Mail.Ru to external links user will be notified about the possible threat to his computer. From now on all links, contained in the incoming emails received by Mail.Ru users, will be automatically authenticated using Web of Trust (WOT) – the world’s leading website reputation rating service that numbers over 32 million resources and is updated every half an hour.

As for today WOT is cooperating with many international social networks and major portals, while Mail.Ru has become the first Russian project and the world’s first mail partner of WOT.

WOT’s ratings are open and are powered by a global community of trustworthy users who rate millions of websites based on their experiences. Having downloaded the WOT add-on user gets an opportunity to estimate the trustworthiness of websites. Over 22 million users all over the world are working together to build WOT database, estimating websites according to four rating categories: trustworthiness; vendor reliability; privacy and child safety. The final rating is built upon users’ views, and also the data from such reliable sources, like Panda Security, PhishTank, hpHosts.

On a specially launched website at wot.mail.ru users can get an exhaustive information upon which safety categories the website, they are planning to move from Mail.Ru, doesn’t satisfy.
