Peoples of Russia: VII all-Russian Festival “Alluring Worlds. Ethnical Russia” in Moscow and Sochi

9 August 2011

On the eve of 9 August, declared by the UN the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Olympiad "Sochi 2014" presents unique traditions of the small peoples of the Russian Federation. In the framework of the VII All-Russia Festival "Alluring Worlds. Ethnic Russia» the representatives of more than 15 ethnic groups will come to Moscow August 9 and to Sochi August 15. At the heart of the cities - at the Revolution Square and the park "Riviera" respectively - will be exhibited traditional dwellings of northerners – tents of skins or bark, and ethnic ensembles will perform, along with master classes in beading, carving bone and making national dolls.

The main idea of the Festival is to demonstrate cultural diversity and unique traditions of rare peoples, which together constitute a unique ethnic map of Russia. In October 2010 as a part of Cultural Olympiad were held successfully "Caucasian games" which revealed the customs and cultural characteristics of the peoples inhabiting the region of the Games. They were attended by over 200 representatives of the North Caucasus, including several ensembles of Karachay-Cherkessia.

In 2011 the Festival "Alluring Worlds. Ethnic Russia" is held with the support of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation and the Organizing Committee of "Sochi 2014". This project brings together more than 40 rare cultural peoples of Russia. The smallest nation, which is represented at the festival "Alluring Worlds" is Kerek: they are only 8 on the Earth at the present time.  However, despite their small size, all ethnic cultures attending the festival have retained the culture of their ancestors, who had been seeking harmony with nature for centuries.

The decision to declare August 9 the International Day of World's Indigenous Peoples was adopted by UN General Assembly in December 1994. It was first celebrated on August 9, 1995. In 2011, the International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World will be celebrated for the 17th time.

Each year the International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World covers a particular topic. For example, the topic of 2008 was "Reconciliation and partnership between States and indigenous peoples", the topic of 2010 - "Film workers belonging to indigenous peoples." The theme for 2011 is "Design, inspired by the traditions and culture of the indigenous peoples of the world."
