History of Russia: Round table in honor of Saint Blessed Grand Duke Andrey Bogolyubsky in Moscow

4 August 2011

Roundtable on "Restoration of historical justice and the importance of deeds of Saint Blessed Grand Duke Andrey Bogolyubsky for the Church. Cross procession as a spiritual relationship of the Orthodox countries" takes place 4 August in Moscow. It is timed to the 900th birthday anniversary of Andrey Bogolyubsky and a nationwide celebration in 2012 of the 1150th anniversary of Russia's statehood.

The organizers of the round table want to draw attention to the fact that the basis of the modern state rests on Russia's historical choice of the new center of Russia in the North-East, made by Prince Andrew Bogolyubsky. It is no coincidence that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, decided to hold historic meeting on the lessons of the Russian statehood, in the light of the approaching 1150th anniversary, in the city of Vladimir, which was celebrating these days the 900th anniversary of its founder, saint Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky, and even visited the Cathedral of the Assumption, where saint relics of the grand duke are buried.

However, the organizers of the roundtable believe that the value of Andrew Bogolyubsky’s deeds for the state and the church are practically unknown to our contemporaries. His role in the development of national statehood is barely mentioned in the educational program in the country's history and is not covered in the national media. Little-known is the significant contribution of Alexander Bogolyubsky to the construction of more than 30 Russian cities, including Moscow, which during his activity had received its city status and a historical chance to become the center of the Russian world for centuries to come.
