History of St. Petersburg: Celebrations timed to 200th foundation anniversary of Kazan Cathedral

Celebrations timed to 200th foundation anniversary of Kazan Cathedral are running in St. Petersburg September 20 - 25. The all-night vigil will be conducted in the cathedral at night on September 20.

September 21 and 22 will see the events in Kazan Cathedral and Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra that will be headed by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

An important event of the jubilee program will be the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to Kazan Cathedral due on September 23. The exposition will be opened in the halls of the Russian Academy of Arts. It was in the Academy of Arts that under the guidance of Count A.S. Stroganov in 1800 was made the project of Kazan Cathedral, which took a decade to build. The exposition will feature works by great Russian artists, sculptors, architects – creators of the cathedral – from the collections of Hermitage, Russian Museum, Tretyakov Gallery, Museum of History of Religion and others.

Sept. 22-24 at Singer House (also known as the House of Books) in St. Petersburg will run the conference “Under the veil of shrine”.

Jubilee celebrations timed to 200th anniversary of Kazan Cathedral will finish on September 25.

On this day in Palace Square will gather the Military Orchestral Service of Russia, there will be a memorial service by M. I. Kutuzov’s grave, flowers will be laid to monuments of M. I. Kutuzov and M. B. Barclay de Tolly.

The concert “Be glorious, be glorious” to be launched in the square in front of Kazan Cathedral will become the finale of the celebrations.
