IT and Culture: Culture Department of Moscow introduces new technologies at museums

The Culture Department of Moscow, which has recently approved a budget for the next five years with a separate item concerning museums and landscape architecture, is introducing new technologies to attract more visitors to cultural sites.

On October 21st 2011 the Head of the Cultural Department of Moscow - Sergei Kapkov - held the first meeting of the Board of Directors of Moscow museums, which highlighted an initiative of city’s museums modernization.

“At united “Moscow Museum”, Tsaritsyno, Kuskovo and Kuzminki estates via 3D- and 4D expositions visitors will take a virtual travel to Moscow of 18th or 19th centuries, see major tank battles of the Great Patriotic War at the “History of T-34 tank” museum or make a visit to the pre-historic period at the zoo”, informs the Culture Department.

First and foremost, according to decisions of the Board of Directors, innovation changes will be introduced into “Battle of Borodino” Museum-panorama, Moscow Museum, “History of T-34 tank” museum, A. N. Skryabin State Memorial Museum, S. A. Esenin Moscow Museum, K. A. Timiryazev State Museum of Biology and V. V. Mayakovsky Museum.

Within modernization initiative eight museums of Moscow will add exhibits with “You can touch it” signs and special amusement areas for kids. Plans also include restoration of “Battle of Borodino” panorama and “Ostankino” estate.

In 2012 the department is going to erect a new building for Ilya Glazunov art gallery and a 40,000 m2 inter-museum repository that will provide all the latest technologies to ensure preservation of museum exhibits.
