IT and Regions of Russia: 2012 to see the launch of .МОСКВА and .MOSCOW domain names on the Internet

The year 2012 will see the launch of .МОСКВА and .MOSCOW domain names on Internet, said the Head of the Information Technologies Department of Moscow Artyom Yermolaev.

As for today the capital city of Russia has the one third share of all domain names in the .RU zone, what totals 1 130 000 domains. “It is beyond the total number of domain registrations in Sweden, South Korea and Austria. Without a doubt, we are the leaders here”, A. Yermolaev said.

It goes without saying that today Internet has become a major communication environment, Moscow along with such cities as New York, is submitting an application for launch of new domain names .МОСКВА and .MOSCOW in .RU and .РФ zones”, - A. Yermolaev added.

He clarified that the application would be submitted in January in 2012. “We hope that it will be approved and residents of Moscow will have their own residence on Internet”.

The Head of the Department also mentioned that “presently the Internet penetration level in the capital city of Russia amounts to 64%, that means that 64% of active population is surfing Internet, 59% of households are connected to the broadband Internet”.

“Moreover we are the leaders not only judging by Internet penetration level. In Moscow Internet connection fee is one of the lowest countrywide”, he added.
