
History of Science: “Origins of Siberian Science” exhibition kicks off in Irkutsk
On November 29th 2011 the History Department of Irkutsk Regional Local Lore Museum is opening “Origins of Siberian Science” exhibition, which is timed to coincide with 160th anniversary of East Siberian branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
The Russian Geographical Society was founded in 1845, and six years later its branch was established in Siberia.
The East Siberian branch of the Russian Geographical Society made not only the scientific contribution, but the public contribution as well – establishment of museums, research libraries, astronomical observatories and meteorological stations. At the moment the East Siberian branch is one of the largest branches of the Russian Geographical Societies.
Exhibits put on display tell about the original material and spiritual culture of urban and rural population of the Siberia. Visitors can discover over 100 exhibits, including: the seal of the East Siberian branch of the Russian Geographical Society, photographs and private belongings of researchers (Obruchev, Potanin) etc.
