
Regions of Russia: “Austrian Library” opened in Nizhny Novgorod
On November 28th 2011 the “Austrian Library” - Russia’s fourth largest cultural and educational center of Austria – was opened at the Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod.
“Austrian libraries” have been organized by the Ministry for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria. Sixty such cultural centers have been set up all over the world. In Russia, apart from “Austrian libraries” in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg such a cultural center is operating only in Nizhny Novgorod. For a long time Nizhny Novgorod “Austrian library” had been operating at the facility of Nizhny Novgorod Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University, and now it will be found at the Higher School of Economics.
The library’s collection numbers over 6 thousand volumes on the humanities in German, Russian and English. These editions let you discover the history, language and culture of Austria.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus Dr. Margot Klestil-Leffler marked, that the cultural center which opened at the facility of the Higher School of Economics – was “a unique site for university cooperation” and wished the new “Austrian library” to become a center of cultural exchange in a short space of time.
In accordance with the agreements signed between the Higher School of Economics National Research University and the Embassy of Austria in Moscow eminent cultural workers and scientists of Austria will arrive in Nizhny Novgorod to give speeches. One of the major events, to be organized at the library, will become a project called “Is Austria a Multicultural Country?”, which will bring together leading international researchers.
What is more, “Austrian library” will become a certified center to offer the international exam of “Austrian German Language Diploma” (“Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch”) program.
