History of St. Petersburg: Exhibition celebrating 70 years since the beginning of “The Road of Life” operation

23 November 2011

A new exhibition “Death and Salvation going side by side...”, timed to 70th anniversary of the ice road known as “The Road of Life” is opening November 23 2011 at the exhibition hall of the Monument to Heroic Defenders of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

The exhibition tells about professionalism and selflessness of people, who ensured regular work of this sole transport artery, which connected besieged Leningrad with the country: soldiers of Ladoga Military Flotilla and North-West Shipping, workers of the ice road and railroad men. The exhibition lifts a veil from many unknown facts in the history of operation of water and ice routes across Lake Ladoga between 1941 and 1944. On display go photographs, documents, private belongings of residents of Leningrad and soldiers of the Red Army from collections of the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg.
