Memorable dates of Russia: Exhibition “The Fine Mind and Brilliant Scientist” celebrating Mikhail Lomonosov’s 300th birth anniversary kicks off in St. Petersburg

16 November 2011

A new exhibition “The Fine Mind and Brilliant Scientist” which marks 300th birth anniversary of Mikhail Lomonosov opened on November 15 2011  at the State Museum of Urban Sculpture in St. Petersburg.

The jubilee museum exhibition reveals the two decade-long history of a contest for design of Mikhail Lomonosov’s monument in Mendeleev Line of Vasilyevsky Island, whose opening in 1986 became a significant contribution to the monumental iconography of a brilliant scientist.

“The Fine Mind and Brilliant Scientist” – was the way the contemporaries described Lomonosov paying tribute to him and acknowledging his merits and the breadth of scientific intelligence. At all times such titans of thought were immortalized by monuments. Sculptural models and graphic projects give a unique opportunity to imagine that you are not just a spectator, but an “expert” of past contests who can make a choice.

Exhibits put on display are contest projects of the monument which come from collections of the Museum and studios of authors – participants of that contest: there are over 40 sculptural models and 20 graphic sheets, which let you discover the diversity of artistic concepts.
