Digital Libraries: “eBooks for Public Libraries” project mounted in Denmark

14 November 2011

Now patrons of Danish libraries are free to borrow eBooks on Internet and upload them to their PCs, tablets and smartphones.  Gyldendal Publishing House and 54 other publishers have concluded an agreement with public libraries.

It means that the Danes can now enjoy access to a large free home library. Ereolen.dk – “eBooks for Public Libraries” project provides access to over 1500 titles on digital book shelves, ready to be uploaded to user’s PCs, tablets or smartphones.

The only one thing you should bear in mind to freely borrow eBooks is a library card or a personal number and a password to enter ereolen.dk website. Here you can borrow a limited number of books for one month at a time. Approx. 80 out of 97 libraries of Denmark have registered in ereolen.dk project.

Usually you are free to borrow five books per month, however it depends on a certain library. When it is time to return the books you may decide to prolong the term for one time, however in this case within the next three months you won’t have access to eBooks. This restriction has been announced by Gyldendal Publishing House.

This experimental project kicked off on November 1 2011 and will run until fall of 2012, the time for libraries to reach a new agreement with publishers upon the results of the first one year experiment.

The project has been initiated by the Agency for Libraries and Media.
