Russian History: Exhibition of works by Ilya Glazunov “The Kulikovo Field” in Barnaul

From 10 November to 11 December 2011 in the State Art Museum of the Altai Krai is being held the thematic exhibition “Kulikovo Field” of the world famous painter Ilya Glazunov. It is provided by the Tula Museum of Visual Arts and includes the cycle of 22 paintings conceived by the master in 1960s for the 600th anniversary of the Kulikovo Battle.

Ilya Glazunov has worked on this subject for several years implementing his concept by use of historical materials, chronicles, hagiography of Sergius of Radonezh and the Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy, study of the Old Russian tale “Zadonshchina” (the region beyond the Don River), popular legends. The cycle “Kulikovo Field” contains 30 paintings, the 22 of which are displayed at the exposition.   

Paintings tell about the history of the feat of arms of the Russian people in the battle whose winning was the first step in the liberation of Russian lands from the Tatar yoke.

Symbolic figures at the exposition are Saints Sergius of Radonezh, Dmitry Donskoy. Such paintings as “Duel between Peresvet and Chelubey”, “Battle”, “Interim advantage of Tatars”, “Ambush regiment” reveal the thick of the unprecedented battle.

The great victory at the Kulikovo Field is a particularly important event for the Russian history. It has entered for good the people’s memory having become a significant part of the Russian national consciousness. The exhibition “Kulikovo Field” gives an opportunity to feel complicity with the events of the Old Russia history, to establish close links between the epochs.
