Regions of Russia: Exposition in Saratov marks 140th anniversary of the first exhibit launched by the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions

On December 16th 2011 Radishchev State Art Museum of Saratov is staging a new exhibition “Peredvizhniki (Itinerants) in Saratov. Journey of Russian Paintings”.

It showcases paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery (35 paintings), which boasts the best works created by the Itinerants (members of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions) collected by P. M. Tretyakov – a friend and an associate of Russian artists. Also on display are paintings and drawings from the collections of Radishchev Museum, the Russian State Museum and Volsk Art Gallery. Visitors may see the works by I. I. Shishkin, I. Ye. Repin, V. D. Polenov, I. I. Levitan, as well as those which a hundred years ago travelled to Saratov as a part of various travelling exhibitions – “Reading the Manifesto of February 19th 1861” by G. G. Myasoedov, “All in the Past” by V. V. Maksimov, I. N. Kramskoy’s “Bee-keeper” and others.

This exhibition marks 140th anniversary of the first exhibit mounted by the Society, one of the most significant art societies in the 2nd half of 19th Century.
