Regions of Russia: New exposition “Suzdal Merchants. Interior Portrait” opens in Suzdal

28 January 2012

26 January 2012 in Suzdal opened a new exposition “Suzdal Merchants. Interior Portrait”. It is displayed in the house of Agapovs merchants, a monument of architecture of the 18th century.

In 1970s the monument was first restored. In 1982 – early 1990s it housed the exposition “Suzdal and its uyezd during the first Russian revolution of 1905”. In 2010 the house was restored for the second time. It was decided to make it the site for the second exposition on merchants, vivid, diligent people who were playing a significant role in the life of the provincial Suzdal.

The first floor exposition, which now occupies the premises of the former smithy, features tools and blacksmith’s items. The interior of the second floor has not remained intact. Since there is not enough information for its reconstruction, visitors can see a relative interior of a living room of a merchant’s house including the everyday life objects widespread in the milieu of merchants and petty bourgeois of the end of the 19th – early 20th century.

The Agapovs’ house also displays valuable documents – fragments of official correspondence, evidences of charitable and social activity of Suzdal merchants.
