68th anniversary of the full liberation of Leningrad: Memorial events in St. Petersburg

On January 27th 2012 which sees 68th anniversary of the full liberation of Leningrad, St. Petersburg will hold memorial ceremonies of laying wreaths and flowers at Piskarevskoye, Serafimovskoye, Bogoslovskoye and Nevskoye cemeteries. In celebration of the end of the Siege of Leningrad city’s inhabitants will lay flowers to monuments of Zhukov and Govorov and “Hero-City Leningrad” stele.

The Museum of Defense and the Siege of Leningrad will attract veterans, soldiers of Leningrad front, siege survivors who will take part in the inauguration of an exhibition “End of Energy Blockade of Leningrad”.

The exhibition is devoted to engineers and power engineering workers, those who during the first winter of the Siege managed to restore Volkhov hydropower plant, produced the cable and laid it at the bottom of Lake Ladoga, and on September 23rd 1942 provided Leningrad with electricity. City’s factories and plans resumed their work, light was turned on in houses and hospitals.

The exhibition in commemoration of the feat of power engineering workers showcases photographs and documents of those days, as well as memoirs.
