The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has made a decision to build a Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki.

A study to explore the possibility of creating a Guggenheim museum in Helsinki was commissioned by the City of Helsinki a year ago. On January 10th 2012 the foundation announced that jointly with Finnish authorities it would contribute to the museum’s establishment. It noted Helsinki was chosen for the interest the city displayed for art and design and also plans of the authorities to develop the infrastructure of the South Harbor.

Authorities of the City of Helsinki began to ponder over building Guggenheim Museum after it had appeared in Bilbao. For five years of its existence the museum managed to make the profit of over $1 billion. Finland also hopes that the new museum will attract more tourists.

The first Guggenheim Museum was founded in 1939 in New York, while in 1959 it moved to a building on Fifth Avenue, which was built to the design of Frank Lloyd Wright. At present the construction of the museum is underway in Abu Dhabi.
