On February 27th 2012 historians and researchers of Adygea showed off the first collected historical maps of medieval Circassia compiled across the whole world for the last twenty years.

The collection entitled “Circassia through maps dated between 14th-19th cc.” includes some 60 maps: navigational, historical and reconstructed. Some documents originate from archives and libraries, some of them come from private collections of Adygea Diaspora.

The lion’s share of maps originates from the collection of a famous scholar and public figure Batiray Yezbek (Yedydzh). The co-authors are the connoisseur of Adygei history, journalist Hussayn Daurov, Alan Djamirze, comments which accompany the maps were prepared by the Candidate of History, leading research fellow of the Republic of Adygea Institute for Research in the Humanities Samir Khotko, who also authored the introduction to the book.

So far there has never been such a work, which would demonstrate the history of Circassia through maps and on such a scale.

“At least 50% of them are unique maps, however the most remarkable to my mind is a large map of Circassia of 1855, which thanks to Alan Djamirze we have received from the National Library of Australia”, S. Khotko said.

The book contains over 200 pages, with the circulation of 1000 copies.
