Science and society: Sergey Kapitsa awarded the Golden Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his scientific merits

The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences named the first holder of the Golden Medal for outstanding achievements in the promotion of scientific knowledge. The new award, established in November 2011, will be awarded to the chief researcher of the Institute for Physical Problems, Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Sergey Kapitsa at the regular meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences February 21, 2012.

All that has been done and is doing Sergey Petrovich Kapitsa for the benefit of science as a scholar, researcher, social activist, famous TV presenter and editor in chief of "In the world of science" journal one cannot just enumerate, let alone grasp.

The Golden Medal for outstanding achievements in the promotion of scientific knowledge was established November 15, 2011 and is awarded on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences by its Presidium on the basis of the relevant competition. Candidates can be nominated by academicians and corresponding members of the Academy; by research institutions, institutions of higher education, scientific and engineering societies, Scientific Councils of the Academy and other state academies.

The medal was established in order to encourage men of science, education, culture, and is awarded once every five years marking the Day of Russian Science.
