Society and church: Ancient icon, a symbol of the Russian state, donated to the Kamchatka eparchy

8 February 2012

Iconographic-restoration workshop "Kanon" donated to the Peter and Paul eparchy and the Kamchatka eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church "The Saviour of Smolensk" icon by a 18th century painter.

The icon will be delivered from Moscow to the peninsula on February 9. It will be housed by the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The action of the transfer of the relics to the Kamchatka eparchy takes place with the blessing of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill.

The icon "The Saviour of Smolensk," ascribed to the icons of "The Third Finding of the Head of John the Baptist" and the icon of the Mother of God "Softening of Evil Hearts", was painted in Moscow in the third quarter of the 18th century. It had spread as a symbol of the Russian state. In 1930 the icon was purchased from one of the destroyed churches in Moscow and remained in a private collection until it was acquired by the "Kanon."
