
Memorable dates of Russia: Exhibit in commemoration of 1150th anniversary of Russian statehood runs in Rostov-on-Don
On February 2nd 2012 the Book Monuments Center of Rostov Region launched an exhibition “State Symbols – Symbols of Time” (in commemoration of the 1150th anniversary of Russian statehood) at Don State Public Library.
The history of the Russian coat of arms, anthem and flag, and other state symbols and signs is revealed on the pages of books dated between 19th-21st cc.
The exhibition showcases remarkable editions on heraldry and state symbols: Alexander Lukier’s “Russian Heraldry” (1855), “The coat of arms and the flag of Russia between 10th and 20th cc.”, colorful editions “Heraldry of Russia 18th c. – early 20th c.” and an encyclopedic reference book “Symbol of power”.
A special section is devoted to state symbols of regions of Russia.
The exhibition will run till March 19th.
Until Mach 5th 2012 the library is running an exhibition which is a part of “From the Treasure House of Don Public Library” series. It turns the attention of visitors to Russian religious literature of 17th c. – first quarter of 19th c.
Here on display are Bibles, Gospels, the Euchologion, the Psalter, the Menaion, the Hagiography etc. Exhibits include John Chrysostom’s “Talks on 14 epistles of Saint Paul” (Kiev, 1623) – the earliest dated book in the library’s collection, printed in Cyrillic script; Moscow Bible (1663) – the first printed Bible edition in Moscow Rus; the so-called Elizabeth’s Bible (1751), published during the reign of Empress Elizabeth of Russia which is still used by the Russian Orthodox Church as an official edition of the Slavic Bible.
