An exhibition of Russian Orthodox icons has opened in Rio de Janeiro. Some tens of icons are displayed in an old mansion in the city’s heart which used to be the residence of the Minister of Defence of imperial Brazil in 19th century, and today houses the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy.

The exposition has been organized by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Rio de Janeiro in partnership with the Saint Martyr Zinaida parish (Moscow Patriarchate) in Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian Academy of Philosophy. Visitors can discover some 30 works of icon painting.

“We tried to present the examples of the most important, celebrated icons of Russia – St. Vladimir, Baptizer of Rus, St. Andrew, as well as copies of wonder-working icons of Mother of God”, said priest Vasily Gelevan of St. Zinaida Church.

The organizers say that icons will be on display till the end of April, however if the exhibition is success among the public the show will run longer till late June.
