Exhibitions: Second Photobiennale of Modern Photography runs in St. Petersburg

23 March 2012

On March 23 2012 the Marble Palace (The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg) is launching the Second Photobiennale of Modern Photography.

Happening on a regular basis the “Museum Biennale of Modern Photography” gives an opportunity to present the art of modern Russian photographers every two years.

The Second Museum Biennale of Modern Photography debuted in 2011. Again, like two years ago Russian photographers had been sending their works to the Russian Museum’s e-mail for several months. Some 1000 works were selected for the second round out of 2000 photographs. The Russian Museum received 760 printed photos. The program of the current Photobiennale doesn’t provide specific nominations or themes that have strict formulation: the final exhibit presents modern photography of all genres. The exposition includes some 350 works, which are divided into 9 thematic sections. The thematic and genre diversity of works which take part in the project, allows to reveal the different sides of photography and to demonstrate the expressiveness of the artistic language.

Following the tradition, the exhibition will feature a voting which will determine the most favored works. By the way, the project also gives an opportunity to the museum to enlarge its collection and introduce the works of modern photographers. When the exhibition is over a special commission of the Russian Museum will consider the question of inclusion of these photos in the Russian Museum’s collection.
