On March 21 2012 the State Art Museum of Altai Krai (Barnaul) is staging a new exhibition “Cossacks in Paris” from the collection of the State Historical Museum (Moscow). The exhibition commemorates the Year of Russian History and the anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812.

The State Historical Museum holds one of the richest collections devoted to the Patriotic War of 1812. Its materials not only shed light on the course of the war, but also let you discover the final stage of the solemn entrance of the Russian army to Paris.

The exhibition centers around the theme “Cossacks in Paris in 1814”. The spring of 1814 – is one of the most remarkable episodes of anti-Napoleonic wars. At that time allied armies-winners, including Don and Urals Cossacks, stayed in Paris. Cossacks added a special exotic touch to the life of the capital city of France. The exposition turns the spotlight on Cossacks, their traditions and customs, their active participation in the wars against Napoleon.

The exposition showcases articles which illustrate the everyday life of Cossacks, their armament and uniform; commemorative medals, icons, personal belongings of Ataman M. I. Platov, portraits of Alexander I and Napoleon, as well as souvenirs of 1912 (produced to commemorate victory’s 100th anniversary). Few of these souvenirs have survived till present days. On display is the image of the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, which was planned by Emperor Alexander I as a monument in celebration of the victory over Napoleon. The show also presents exhibits from the collection of the State Art Museum of Altai Krai.
