Russian culture abroad: “The Modern Russian Photography” Exhibition in Houston

16 March 2012, in Houston, Texas (USA) launched the 14th International Photo Biennale "Photofest 2012." The central event is the exhibition "The Modern Russian Photography" (the end of 1940s - 2012), featuring the history of photography in Russia for more than six decades.

According to the organizers of the exhibition, there are more than 800 works by 142 photographers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The exhibition is divided into three parts, devoted to the three periods of Russian history: "The Thaw" (late 1940s - 1970s), "Perestroika" (mid 1980s - 2010) and the "Younger Generation" (2007 - 2012) . Most of the works have been provided by the Lumiere Brothers Moscow Center of Photography.

In addition, a separate exhibition is devoted to Soviet photographers - the winners of the World Press Photo, most prestigious annual award in the field of photojournalism.

"Fotofest" provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to American audience the history of Russian photography. Many of the works are exhibited outside Russia for the first time.

In addition to main exhibitions, the International Photo Biennale includes a photo auction of works made by 30 Russian and Ukrainian photographers. In addition, there will be a variety of forums devoted to photography, lectures, master classes, concerts and viewing of thematic movies.

Photo Biennale runs until April 29. "Photofest" is the oldest festival of photography in the United States. This year, various activities of the Biennale will be held in more than a hundred museums, art galleries and universities in Houston, Galveston and other Texas cities.
