Exhibitions: “Famous and Unknown Karl Brullov” exhibit kicks off in St. Petersburg

15 March 2012

A new exhibition “Famous and Unknown Karl Brullov” is opening on March 15 2012 at St. Michael’s Castle (The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg).

The exhibit presents the artist’s graphic works from the State Russian Museum’s collection and the Closed Mutual Investment Fund of Art Objects “Atlanta Art”. The exposition includes some 70 drawings and watercolors by Karl Brullov that he created primarily during his first travel to Italy in the late 1820s – early 1830s. Alongside with Brullov’s well-known “Italian genres” the exposition showcases a little-known series “Italian Models in National Costumes” (1828-1829, The State Russian Museum)

This is the first time the public in Russia has an opportunity to discover “The Italian Album” by Karl Brullov, which features thirty-three paintings and watercolors and also includes a page with the artist’s dedication to Countess Stephanie Wittgenstein. These paintings and watercolors created in the late 1820s – early 1830s, may be regarded as another evidence of the artist’s passion for Italian genre motives and close and attentive study of the nature, what was so peculiar to the master.
