On 3rd March 2012 near the walls of Moscow Kremlin the first stone was laid for a future monument to Patriarch Hermogenes, who is credited with initiating Russians’ resistance against foreign invaders in 1612. The monument construction at the center of Alexander Garden was blessed by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill. This day coincided with the memorial day of Patriarch Hermogenes. A service was held in his honor at the Dormition Cathedral in Moscow Kremlin, where his relics are found.

According to Patriarch Kirill, an idea to erect a monument “to the great patriot and defender of the Fatherland” appeared in 1913, when he was canonized. Patriarch Kirill announced a contest for the best monument.
