
Information technology and history: The first digital archaeology lab to be set up in the North-West of Russia
Archaeological laboratory for digitization of cultural heritage will be established in Pskov. This laboratory will be the first of the kind in the North-West of Russia.
The activities of the laboratory will allow citizens who have no special education and no relation with the study of history, to participate in archaeological excavations, a unique opportunity to touch the material history of their country.
Using 3D-scanning and rapid prototyping (creating an exact copy of a 3D-model of the object), visitors to the laboratory, without fear of damaging the fragile precious archeological artifact, will be able to understand and feel the spirit of the time, get acquainted with authentic material sources of bygone eras, see and feel what is usually available only to a narrow circle of specialists and archaeologists. At present, collection of archaeological finds from excavations in Pskov, has over 200,000 items.
In addition to permanent expositions, on the basis of the Archaeological Center will be organized a series of mobile exhibitions in different parts of the region, educational and cultural institutions. "The School of Living History" will acquaint residents with the culture, lifestyle and traditional crafts of medieval Pskov, military history and culture of the region.
