2 April 2012

The project of the National Portrait Gallery, initiated by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, will be implemented in the virtual space and at temporary exhibitions, said Deputy Minister of Culture Andrei Busygin at a press conference of RIA Novosti, March 30, 2012.

The project so far involves the largest national museums - the State Historical Museum (SHM), the Tretyakov Gallery (STG) and the State Russian Museum (SRM), it is from their collections have been selected portraits, featured today at the first exhibition, which opened in the State Historical Museum as part of the establishment of the National Portrait Gallery.

One of the main questions of the creation of the National Portrait Gallery is: which historical figures are to be represented. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Culture signed a document on the establishment of a special council, which included not only the museum workers, but also scientists, and members of the public, including the descendants of immigrants of the first wave, one of which - Nikita Lobanov-Rostovsky had made a proposal to organize the National Portrait Gallery.
