Libraries of Russia: 217th anniversary of foundation of the Imperial Public Library

May 25, 2012 the National Library of Russia (St. Petersburg) is hosting the events dedicated to celebration of the 217th anniversary of the foundation of the Imperial Public Library and the All-Russian Day of Libraries.

The main building of the NLR is holding the scientific conference "Slavic literary heritage in the repositories of St. Petersburg." The conference is held to celebrate the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture - Memorial Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The conference brings together leading experts in the field of research of manuscripts and early printed books, representing the major scientific organizations of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Reports of researchers treat with the unique monuments of literary culture held by the libraries of St. Petersburg which demonstrate medieval cultural relations of the Slavic peoples, especially of the southern and eastern Slavs.

The same day, in the Korff Hall will open the book-illustrative exhibition devoted to the last directors of the pre-revolutionary Imperial Public Library – N. K. Schilder and D. F. Kobeko. The exhibition features historical and literary works by N. K. Schilder and D. F. Kobeko, materials from the Russian book collection, the Russian journal collection, archival materials, records of service and prize papers, orders issued by the Ministry of Education.
