Presidential Library: New Acquisitions

The Presidential Library’s holdings have been enriched by digital copies of documents delivered by the National Library of Republic of Karelia.

The newly acquired documents were included in the the northern regions of the Russian empire) and the Emperors section)

Reviews of the Olonets Province of 1878, 1887, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898 issued as an appendix to the report of the Olonets governor, contain the official information on natural and productive forces of the province, economic activity of its population, taxes and duties, public landscaping and deanery, public health, public charity, and public education.

The Olonets Province, despite its proximity to the capital, was not spoiled by frequent visits by members of the imperial family. That’s why every visit became a special event, and according to the authors' of the "On the imperial visits of the Olonets Province by the royal family in the 19th century", released by Olonets Provincial Statistics Committee, was an epoch in the history and everyday life of the people, forever capturing the heart and memory indelibly . Each issue is devoted to one of these trips, and includes a description of the route, geographical characteristics of places along the route, information about the towns and remarkable places of the province, visited by distinguished guests, stories about their meetings with provincial authorities and residents.

Issue 1 (Petrozavodsk, 1877) focuses on the journey of the Emperor Alexander I in 1819. It was the first visit to the region by the head of the state since Peter I.

Issue 2 (Petrozavodsk, 1878) describes the passage through the territory of the province in May 1844 of the eighteen years old Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, bound for Archangel to carry out the educational voyage on board of "Ingermanland" from Arkhangelsk to Kronstadt.

In the center of issue 3 (Petrozavodsk, 1878) is the report on the journey to the province of Emperor Alexander II, accompanied by Prince Charles of Württemberg, husband of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, in the framework of the visit to the Russian North in 1858.

Issue 4 (Petrozavodsk, 1878) tells of visiting of the province in 1863 by the eldest son of Emperor Alexander II, Grand Duke Nicholas Alexandrovich, which was the second and last trip to the Crown Prince of Russia.

Issue 5 (Petrozavodsk, 1872) features the trip of the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, who, in June 1870, started his journey to the northern seas by navigating through the Mariinsk Canal System from St. Petersburg to Petrozavodsk in steam boat of the Guards.

Issue 6 (Petrozavodsk, 1878) contains a description of the Olonets part of the journey of Grand Dukes Sergei Alexandrovich, Pavel Alexandrovich, Konstantin Konstantinovich and Dmitry Konstantinovich, undertaken in 1878 by the young representatives of the Imperial House to study historic heritage of the areas, which in ancient times belonged to the Novgorod and Pskov lands.

Issue 7 (Petrozavodsk, 1885) tells of the journey through the province of the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, accompanied by his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, which was undertaken in 1884 in the study of the status of the troops in St. Petersburg, Novgorod and Olonets provinces.
