Culture and history: Historical Society revived in Russia
After the decades the Imperial Historical Society resumes its work again, but as Russia's Historical Society. One of the most important results of its work was the revival and development of archives in the province. Inspirers of the new society have set to themselves even more significant tasks.
The ceremony of establishment of the Russian Historical Society at the Reception Hall of the Government - the former mansion of Arseny Morozov - brought together not only historians. Journalists, directors of museums, libraries, archives, scholars, and politicians were among the participants of the meeting. Their main purpose is to recreate the legendary Imperial Historical Society.Founded in 1866, with the blessing of Alexander II, the historical society was a closed organization: it consisted of only those who had a real opportunity to influence the course of the history of the Russian state. Ministers and top generals, bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, big industrialists, and the elite of the academic science were among its creators.
After 95 years, the “Year of History” – the society is reviving. One of its key objectives is to preserve the historical memory.
The improvement of the final evaluation for students on history in schools and universities, digitization of archives, the establishment of international contacts, returning of relics and documents to the country – the range of urgent issues has been outlined by the members of the society in their very first speeches.
Sergei Naryshkin was elected Chairman of the Society. Subsequent meetings will be held in the form of live debates. All the materials will be available on the website of the Historical Society.
