22 June 2012

Archaeological discoveries of recent years are collected in the exposition, presented by the State Museum Reserve “Staraya Ladoga” in the Leningrad region on June 20. The exhibition "Rus of Rurik" was opened in the framework of the interregional conference, organized by the Museum and several scientific centers of Russia, and dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the origin of the Russian statehood.

The year 862 is considered to be the starting point of this long time event in the modern history of Russia. “Tale of Bygone Years” describes real events - calling on the reign of the population group of the northern part of Eastern Europe immigrants from Scandinavia - Rurik and his brothers.

Items tell us about the culture of Ladoga of times of the first Russian princes - Rurik, Oleg and Igor. Here, on the banks of the Volkhov, was located a wooden building -  a ground settlement, which was closely associated with commercial, military and pilgrimage routes “from the Varangians to the Greeks”, converged in the north in the valley of the River Volkhov.

Things, found in cultural layers of the residential building, are dated to the years of 840-960. They are handicrafts, gifts or purchases - from household items to jewelry. Here are Arab coins, Eastern European jewelry, dishes made by Russian and overseas craftsmen, the Scandinavian costume elements, as well as Central Asian beads.
