The Chinese Xinhua news agency reported about the holding of the initiated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) the Diplomatic Conference on Protection of Audiovisual performances (audiovisual works).

The forum is held in Beijing on June 20-26. The main purpose of the event, organized by the Chinese side, is to sign a binding international “Treaty on the protection of rights to audiovisual performance”, the observance of which will provide the protection of the material and moral interests of the author, performers and organizers – rightholders in the countries joining the treaty.

The uniqueness of the upcoming event is not only a huge counterfeit market of the Celestial Empire, which now will be legalized in terms of copyright observance, but also the fact that the conclusion of such an international treaty on copyright is held for the first time since the creation of the PRC.

It is interesting that at the international level instead of the term “audiovisual work” is used the term “audiovisual performance”. It means that audiovisual works are recognized as objects of related rights, whereas under the legislation of the Russian Federation such works are subjects of copyright.

The Conference will bring together more than 500 official guests from 185 countries - participants of WIPO, as well as numerous representatives of all interested parties (record companies, copyright society for the protection and collective management of rights, performers, writers and composers, script writers, etc.).
