18 June 2012

The Novgorod Museum Reserve commissioned Hermitage experts to restore the ancient  kratir – a silver cup of the end of the XI century that has no analogues. Complex restoration works will be carried out using new laser machines. During the restoration it is no need to disassemble or weld the exhibit. It does not get warm or change its weight.

The vessel for the Eucharist, decorated with the canonical images of saints, was made for the Saint Sophia Cathedral. We know the jeweler's name: it is engraved on the bottom of the vessel - the master of the Costa. Kratir is at least 930 years old. “This is a very large vessel for the Eucharist, which is preserved in the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod the Great. Not only it is made of silver, there are almost no similar works of art, the very form of our kratir resembles the Cup of the Last Supper”, - emphasizes the chief curator, deputy director general of the Novgorod Museum Reserve, Natalia Gormina.
