Information technologies and cartography: Three-dimensional city models are added to the mobile app Google Earth

Google has added three-dimensional city models to the mobile application Google Erath for a number of devices on the platform iOS.

Currently, users have access to 3D model of Rome and about ten cities of the USA. Google representatives say that they add models of new cities as fast as they can.

“By the end of the year we plan to cover cities in which totally live 300 million people”, Google say.

The company began developing its cartographic services in 3d direction, when it launched three-dimensional building models in the framework of the Google Erath service in 2006. Now, according to Google, users can view about 75% of world buildings.

The solution of adding 3D models of entire cities to the mobile version of maps, which will include not only buildings, but also other objects of the landscape, was announced by Google in the beginning of June.

This project became possible due to technology recognition and image processing. They allow to automatically recreating the terrain, based on aerial photographs taken at an angle of 45 degrees. Pictures for the service are made by special planes equipped with cameras that imprint detail the urban landscape.

Russian users of store programs for mobile devices, Apple - App Store - still cannot get access to the Google Earth application. The description of the application states that it supports the Russian language.
