Internet and society: 233 million domains registered on the web

17 July 2012

According to Verisign, the number of domains registered in the Internet in the first quarter of this year reached 233 million, 7.5 million up as compared to the previous quarter. According to the register data the number of web addresses in a year has increased by 11%, while the quarterly growth rate is 3.3%.

Let us remind you that Verisign is managing domain zones .com and .net itself, and according to these data, the increase was 2.5% and 8.1% respectively. The total number of domain names in the two zones amounted to 116.7 million. However, only 88% of domain names belong to truly operating websites, while other domains are just "parked". The company also notes that among active domain names, 17% are single- page web sites, and about 69% - multi-page web sites.

The company also reports that the national domains ccTLD (Country-code top-level domain) have more impressive growth rates, rather than international names and the so-called IDN, or Internationalized Domain Names. At present, ICANN approved 30 applications for IDN, and the program fast-track for introduction of new domain zones launched in 2009.

Speaking of domain registration in the new IDN, Verisign notes that the Russian domain .rf is hors concours. In the first quarter it registered 811,000 new domains.

Leaders among the classic ccTLD in Latin is Germany, with its domain zone .de, Britain, China, Holland and Russia.
