Exhibitions: “Madonna and Angels” Exposition in St Petersburg

July 12, 2012 the State Museum of the History of Religion (St. Petersburg) opens an exhibition, "Madonna and Angels", covering the interpretation of the image of the Virgin Mary and pictures of angels in the sculpture of 19th – 20th centuries.

The exhibition features the monuments of Western European Art of 19th – 20th centuries from the museum collections and the works of a St. Petersburg sculptor, Svetlana Melnichenko - about 70 exhibits: sculptures, drawings and works of decorative art.

The image of the Virgin Mary and the angel appears to the spectator in all its diversity - Madonna Immaculate Conception (France, XIX c.), The Ascension of Madonna (Poland, XIX c.), Madonna of Lourdes (France, early XX c.), Adoration of the Madonna (Germany, XIX c.), etc.

In sculpture and graphic works by S. Melnichenko Madonna and Angels are generalized images, full of vitality and a sense of the earth.

The exhibition "Madonna and Angels" at the Museum of the History of Religion provides an opportunity to see the development of this image in time and space of sculpture.
