History and culture: Book from the Imperial Library has been donated to the Museum Reserve “Tsarskoye Selo”

28 August 2012

Holdings of the State Museum Reserve "Tsarskoye Selo" have been enriched by a valuable item that has returned here after eighty plus years. An American with Russian roots, captain of far navigation, and descendant of Naryshkin Pyotr Sarandinaki gave the museum the book "Four thousand years of the universal history, depicted in four tables... to use in institutions and for history devotees. Essay by Vladimir I. Schmitt". (Saint-Petersburg, 1823). The stamp on the title indicates that this edition comes from the Tsarskoye Selo Imperial Library.

Peter Sarandinaki personally came to the museum to give a book. Having learnt how the stamp of the Tsarskoe Selo imperial library looks like and having found it in one of the editions of the family collection, Pyotr immediately reported about it to the museum. His father bought this book in the thirties of the last century in the U.S. stock – where were sold items for a symbolic price not claimed by the auction.
