World history: The 200th anniversary of meeting between Alexander I and Bernadotte is marked in Turku

The 200th anniversary of the meeting between the Russian Emperor Alexander I and the Swedish Crown Prince Carl Johan Bernadotte, which influenced on the course of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the subsequent development of Northern Europe, is marked in Turku. It was then that Sweden has pledged not to assist Napoleon in the war against Russia, recognized the sovereignty of Russia over Finland, and Russia in its turn has agreed to join the Swedish crown of Norway.

In honor of this historic meeting in Turku a series of commemorative events is organized.

The public library opens the exhibition for free visit "The meeting in Turku", which contains materials telling about this historic event.

The audience saw the theatrical performance "The lights of power", in which the events of 1812 were reconstructed by Finnish actors with the participation of military history clubs from St. Petersburg and Vyborg. On the bank of the river Aura members of these clubs broke the open to the public bivouac, where you can get acquainted with life of soldiers of the era Napoleonic wars.

On the bank of the Aura, in front of the former governor's house (in which in 1812 Alexander and Bernadotte met), was opened a monument to the two monarchs. A sculptural composition depicts a conversation of the Emperor and the Crown Prince. The opening ceremony of the monument, which was held on August 24, 2012, was visited by the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö.
