27 September 2012

September 26, 2012 the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture opens an exhibition “Big Moscow. XX century”.

The exhibition presents the major projects of Moscow development of the XX century by prominent architects of their time, including the first reconstruction plan of "New Moscow" of 1918-1923 by I. V. Zholtovsky and A. V. Shchusev, a conceptual expansion project "Parabola" by N. A. Ladovsky and a legendary Stalinist reconstruction plan of 1935 by V. N. Semenov and S. E. Chernyshev.

During a century the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture collected and stored designs, layouts, bids, alternative projects of reconstruction of Moscow. They are the visual fabric of the exhibition, which is woven into archival film and photographs.

The first sketch plan of reconstruction "New Moscow" (1918-1923) was developed under the direction of City Council Workshop by I. V. Zholtovsky and then by A. V. Shchusev. One of the main objectives of the plan was the design and placement of public authorities in new or historic buildings. Materials of the plan "New Moscow" provided to the museum by private collectors, are exhibited for the first time.

Among the exhibits there are also a number of graphics, specially restored and displayed for the first time.

The exhibition is timed to the competition for the project design of the "Concept of development of Moscow agglomeration", which allows to reconsider the invaluable experience of urban development in terms of modern and innovative proposals and to more deeply assess the competition.
