History of Russia: Historical and documentary exhibition “Revival of Novgorod – the symbol of the Russian statehood. 1944-1959”

27 September 2012

September 27, 2012 in the Reading Room of the State Archive of Contemporary History of the Novgorod region (Novgorod the Great) in the framework of the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of the Russian statehood is opening a historical and documentary exhibition "Revival of Novgorod - the symbol of the Russian statehood. 1944-1959".

Novgorod the Great is one of the oldest cities in Russia, a recognized historical center of spirituality, state and culture. In the mid-twentieth century, the continued existence of the city was threatened: military operations, a long period of occupation during the World War II led to severe damages in the city. The revival of Novgorod among 15 oldest Russian towns became a symbol of the revival of the country and the people in the postwar period.

The exhibition includes about a hundred archival documents from the funds of the State Archive of Contemporary History of the Novgorod region, which reveal the main stages of recovery and direction of Novgorod in the postwar period, the development of the city as a cultural and economic center of the newly formed region, the contribution of builders, architects, restorers, scientists, residents of Novgorod and the region in the reconstruction of the city. Documents are available on the stands and display cases, and consist of four sections:

- Ancient city – new city.

- The returned life to the city.

- Reconstruction of monuments of the Novgorod architecture.

- The city continues to live.
